Lights, sound, action without certainty . . . Explore the uncertain world of light and sound with Randolph Macon College’s Dr. Cedar Riener as he discusses and demonstrates the Science of Illusions.

Cedar Riener, PhD
Dr. Riener is an Assistant Professor of Psychology at Randolph-Macon College in Ashland, VA.  Dr. Riener’s professional interests span both basic and applied research. His basic research investigates how the state of our body influences how we perceive the spatial layout of the natural world. One of his studies found that hills appear steeper when we are sad. His applied research seeks to apply findings in cognitive science to education. He has recently published and presented on the myth of learning styles. He earned his Ph.D. in cognitive psychology from the University of Virginia. He’s @criener on Twitter and blogs about psychology, education and society here.

Can I order dinner?
Yes, The Speakeasy will offer their limited Speed Menu. Service will continue throughout the evening (5:30 to 9:00) including during the program. It may also be possible to dine in the separate Speakeasy Grill (in the front of the building) prior to or after the program. To find out, please call the restaurant directly at 804-308-2913.

I don’t drink alcohol, do you ever have any non-pub events?
Pub is in our name, but sipping on a glass of water is completely copacetic. Our focus is more about enjoying the night’s topic and each other, and less about whatever liquids are in hand. While we’re often in bars, it’s not always the case. Subscribe below for emails and we’ll send location and other details to you two weeks before each event.

*What’s the deal with the Dry T-Shirt Contest?
Fact: Curious minds have been gathering at Science Pub RVA since June 5, 2012.
Our second-ever dry to-shirt contest is simply a way to shine a spotlight on you — the science enthusiasts who understand the value (and fun) of science in our lives. Anyone can participate. Wear a sciencey T-shirt, we’ll line you up and give you a few seconds to describe your shirt. We’ll high-five the cleverness, agree with the earnestness, laugh, think, applaud and appreciate your nerdy ways. Judges will judge. Someone will win. (Prize is bragging rights and a modest gift basket of WCVE swag.)
